Is the licence application fee included?

How old do you need to be to get a marine licence?

You must be 16 years old to apply for a marine licence with the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Can I start my training earlier?

Yes, the Statement of Competency I issue to successful students is valid for 6 months so you can technically begin your learning at 15 1/2 years of age.

When do you run courses?

Face-to-face assessment days are available most weekends, these days are allocated on a first to complete the online learning basis. Specific dates can only be guaranteed after completion of online learning.

How long does the online learning take?

• 4-6 hours for Boat only.

• 5-7 for boat & Jet Ski.

• 1-2 hours for Jet Ski only.

You have 12 months to complete the online learning and 3 months to book in your face-to-face assessment day on completion ​

​How long does the face-to-face assessment day go for?

• 1 hour of refresher training 

• 45 minutes per assessment (Boat & Jet Ski)

Minimum on water time:

• 1 Student = 1 hour & 45 minutes

• 2 Students = 2 hours & 25 minutes

• 3 Students = 3 hours & 5 minutes

• 4 Students = 3 hours & 45 minutes

We recommend putting a day aside to complete your face-to-face​

Can I drive my boat after I complete the course?

Not alone without another licence holder, the Statement of Competency is not a licence, you must apply at the Department of Transport and Main Roads within 6 months of completing the course.

I have difficulty reading, can you offer any assistance? 

Yes, the assessment can be administered orally for those who have LLN barriers. Please notify TOTT prior to enrolment to discuss your personalised training & assessment strategy
